Medical Billing And Coding – Starting Your Career As A Medical Biller And Coder

medical billing and codingDo you want to know how to make great money in your own medical billing and coding business? Then read on, and I’ll let you in on some tips and advice to get you started in this lucrative profession. But first, let me make it clear that this is not a get rich quick scheme. If you need a fast income, you can stop reading now.

Another thing I need to alert you about is, the fact that these are actually two separate professions that serve the healthcare industry. You can decide to focus on medical billing or medical coding, or as I recommend, you can become proficient in both and enjoy the best in both income and job security.

Here’s my first tip. Get started as soon as possible in order to take advantage of the market that is getting bigger even as I write this blog. The baby boomers are aging into their senior years, and their healthcare needs are what’s going to drive this market.

Medical Billing And Coding – Getting Started

Ok, here’s my second tip. Make a decision on whether you want to focus on billing or coding or both. This is important because the next steps you take will be in preparation to make your choice a reality. Choosing one or the other will determine the academic path you will take and the amount of time it’s going to take, before you get your business off the ground.

Let’s break down the three choices, billing, coding, both, and take a look at how to start each one. First up is, medical billing. This choice can actually get you into business the quickest and with probably the least amount of start up costs (educationally speaking).

You see, you don’t really need a degree to get started. This field allows for on the job training, so academically, you might only need a certain period of time on the job for training before becoming proficient enough to strike out on your own.

While this may be the only option for those with limited financial means or opportunity, who decide that a quick entry and postponement of further academic studies is the only way to get started, I applaud their strategy. But in truth, the best way to experience future success is to buckle down to at least an Associate’s of Science degree from an accredited educational institution and complete a certification exam from a nationally accrediting body.

Remember, your goal is to start your own business and if you’re going to compete against some of the top candidates, you’ll need all the degrees and certifications you can get. You’ll need to join some of the best associations and network with the owners and managers of medical clinics and hospitals in order to stay on top of new contractual opportunities that may come up.

Medical Billing And Coding – Focus on Coding

The medical coding profession is the best paying of the two occupations, but it is also more complex and can take longer to master. The pay-off? You can virtually write your own ticket if you have a strong command of this profession.

This is definitely not a job that you want to take shortcuts with. The most important thing you can do is to commit yourself to at least a Bachelor’s of Science degree and then armed with the degree and a coding certification from a nationally renowned association for this medical field such as, the AAPC American Academy of Professional Coders, you will have a solid foundation from which to market your skills to the medical profession.

Can you choose a lesser degree such as an Associate’s of Science for this occupation? The answer is yes, but here is my third tip. Always go for the best degree possible when choosing your career. This doesn’t mean that you should go for a Doctoral degree because, the ROI or return on investment doesn’t justify the cost.

You wouldn’t make much, if any, more in income being a PhD than having a master’s degree, but waiting to achieve a master’s also doesn’t make sense since you can experience the bulk of income potential with a bachelor’s degree. Got it?

Medical Billing And Coding – Going For The Gusto

If you really want a successful medical billing and coding business that is truly recession proof, this is probably your best option. Having the skills to accomplish both professions makes you pretty indispensable for any organization trying to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

No matter which side of your medical billing and coding business that might experience a plateau or stagnation, the other side can keep you fully contracted. In the best scenario, both sides of your business keep you in high demand and allow you to command the best in service fees for your skills.

Now here’s my fourth tip, Focus on the occupation that will pay the best as your foundation, in this case, that’s the Coding side. Once you have the education, credentialing and experience established, you can then take on the education and training for the billing side of your profession.

My fifth tip is very simple, if it is possible to complete this training online, do it. You can keep your successful business going or even reduce your hours in order to allow for more time to focus on this aspect of your business.

The benefit of flexible study schedules and reduced academic costs for completion of this profession means that you can now market yourself as the best candidate for contractual opportunities because you know how to handle the job from both points of view. There it is, a medical billing and coding business you own and operate, and enjoy, for years to come.
